The vault Saint
Vincent |
|
 |
The majority of the vaults of
the Colombanais Country are enclosed i.e.
integrated into a property and only
accessible through it’s gates (Saint Roch at
la fosse Hingant) or semi enclosed: where to
the private door is added a public door
opening on the outside to give access to the
population (Sainte Sophie at la Ville
Bague). La Chapelle Saint Vincent is the
only vault frairienne of Saint Coulomb, a
frairie being a village community creates
around a Patron saint, here, Saint Vincent
Ferrier (preacher of the local inhabitants
of Saint Malo, canonized in 1455). |
Built in
XVIème century, it depended then on the
parish of Paramé and was attached to the
parish of Saint Coulomb only at the XIXème
century. Simple quadrilateral of a modest
size (13m on 5m), it is directed to the
West. On the western frontage surmounted by
a pinnacle in arcade undoubtedly added about
1644, lies the principal entry. The chorus,
turned towards the east, is lit by a modern
stained glass window representing Saint
Vincent Ferrier. Perfectly maintained, one
can admire here a statue of the Virgin of
the XVIIIème century.
The chapel is devoted and a mass is held
here each Thursday from May 1 to September
30. In the south of the Vault, a secondary
door opens on a Cross which reminds one of
the XVIème century or beginning of the
XVIIème century. Cut in the granite, this
cross is of octagonal form. Its former face
is decorated by a Christ in Cross
surmounting a death's-head and inscription "INRI"
(Jesus de Nazareth, king of the Jews), on
the left a crescent of the moon, on the
right a sun supplement this decoration. On
the other face, a small fleurdelized niche
shelters a statue of the Virgin. An
enigmatic inscription (the specialists have
not yet understood its significance) covers
the 2 arms of this face. |
