FN Spy: Cyndi Lauper’s Memories… A New Dog for Donald Pliner

Lauper waxes nostalgic on her first pair of sparkly shoes.

Shoe Time
The Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” might be Cyndi Lauper’s latest endeavor, but the show, for which she penned the music and lyrics, also brought back some childhood memories for the pop icon. “[My favorite shoe moment is when the character] Trish brings in a pair of boots with beautiful rhinestones on the back,” Lauper told Spy while attending the recent Jeffrey Fashion Cares soiree in New York. “When I was little, I had a pair of patent leather shoes that had rhinestones, and I would sit on the floor with the sun shining in and make rainbows on the wall.” But the fashion-loving celebrity was quick to point out that she was far from donning designer duds back then. “I got those shoes at a discard store on Jamaica Avenue and 102nd Street,” she recalled.

Pliners’ Pups
Donald and Lisa Pliner’s beloved Maltese, Babydoll, is getting a mini-me: MoonLite, a 5-month-old puppy who’s nearly identical to her older “sister,” according to the couple. Babydoll has been part of the Donald J Pliner brand for years, appearing in marketing materials and even on several shoe styles, but now the 11-year-old pampered pooch is ready for some downtime at home — and a companion. “It’s getting harder to take her with us when we travel for [business],” Lisa Pliner told Spy. “We felt like [if there was] another one of her around, she might not be upset when we leave.” Pliner noted that the new addition also came at the request of the couple’s daughter, Starr, who gave the new pet her name. MoonLite, who will go by Moon, is currently completing her first round of dog training in Indianapolis and will move in with the Pliners in May.

Spiked Heels
Andrej Pejic knows a thing or two about shoes. The androgynous model has walked the runway for such labels as Jean Paul Gaultier, Paul Smith and Raf Simons in myriad styles, both men’s and women’s. Pejic’s favorite footwear labels range from Jeffrey Campbell to Prada, and the fashion insider hopes that list will one day include his own brand. “Eventually, I want to [design] shoes,” Pejic told Spy, noting that he will soon bow his own fashion label, starting with T-shirts. “I want to create a whole line of really fun things.” But fun doesn’t necessarily mean comfortable in Pejic’s book. “The shoes are going to be called Codeine Heels,” he quipped, “because you need codeine [to wear] the best heels.”
