If you were sleeping, James Whitner is ensuring you’re wide awake with his & A Ma Maniere’s latest effort. As part of the rollout for the titular film uniting his “While You Were Sleeping” collection, the brand head graced attendees of a pre-premiere event with a true one-of-one, a Swoosh-laden A Ma Maniere Converse Chuck 70.
While it would’ve been notable enough on its own, the stand-out branding detail itself wears some intricate detailing, embroidered onto the quarter of the shoe and wearing a textured split down its midline. Zooming out, the neutral tones defining the other six members of the WWYS collection remain, especially evident with the burgundy piping surrounding the midsole. And if Nike’s inclusion on the Chuck 70 wasn’t enough for you, the peripheries reveal even more of the “worlds collide” motif, with the shoe arriving in an Air Jordan 1 box that mirrors the pair’s cream and burgundy palette.
In the initial promo for the “While You Were Sleeping” collection, James Whitner had teased a monumental 7th edition, and this Chuck 70 absolutely fits the bill, marking the first official time since Converse became part of the fabric in Beaverton that the classic silhouette has worn a Swoosh. In an unofficial capacity, Chinatown Market put their spin on the same concept with a custom pair back in 2018. However, perhaps more notably, the vaunted Virgil Abloh aimed to do the same as a part of his “The Ten” collection, but the brand mashup idea wouldn’t make it to market.
Currently, the A Ma Maniere Converse Chuck 70 is expected to remain a family & friends edition, with some who received the pair sharing that theirs are just 1/50 in the UK and 1/100 in the US. Keep it locked into our coverage and our Sneaker Release Dates for updates if this becomes a more widely available proposition.
