Since being brought back last year, the PUMA Speedcat has been largely referred to as a potential successor to the trending adidas Samba, or at the very least a viable alternative in the slim-soled sneaker space. Originally designed for Formula 1 back in the 1990s, the model has taken on archival colorways and several new styles like a ballet-inspired version to much acclaim. Now in another big leap, PUMA is expanding the Speedcat family with a new, upgraded model called the Speedcat Plus.
The Speedcat silhouette and Formstrip stay the same, but the materials and layering are drastically different. While the OG Speedcat traditionally features suede, the Speedcat Plus shifts into a more rugged leather and mesh mix. Starting up top, the sneaker features a V-shaped leather overlay that covers the toe and sides of the tongue. Matching leather placements run under the Formstrips on both sides, thus framing a quilted mesh base. Fabric loop eyelets break further from the OG Speedcat, while an altered backtab brings a subtle suede cameo into the fold.
The PUMA Speedcat Plus releases June 1st for $110 in two colorways; “Lime Smash/Black” and “Black/Red.” See official images of both options below and visit our Sneaker Release Dates page to browse other upcoming PUMAs.
