Zendaya will soon be wearing her own shoes on the red carpet.
The actress and singer jetted to New York City for a launch event, where she unveiled her debut collection of spring ’16 styles, titled Daya after her family nickname. From cutout details to fringe touches on a variety of slides, wedges, block heels, and pointed-toe flats, the styles also embrace bold colors, from fuschia to cobalt.
In the showroom of Titan Industries, her partner for the line, Zendaya sat down with Footwear News to talk candidly about all things shoes and her new venture.
“I wanted shoes that were going to speak for themselves. If [consumers] didn’t know who the heck I was, which a lot of people don’t, they are still going to like the shoes,” she said. “I don’t want people buying because they’re Zendaya shoes — they are for everyone.”
Affordability was very important to the star as well, so all styles come in under $225. And even though she’s 5-foot-10, Zendaya did not shy away from creating high-heeled looks.
“One of her big platforms is telling girls that it’s okay to be tall and wear heels — it’s okay to be the tallest girl in the room,” said longtime stylist and design collaborator Law Roach.
But Zendaya chimed in, saying that there’s a time and place for everything when it comes to shoes.
“If you’re going to the airport, I’m not the lady to wear heels — I’m just not going to do it,” she said. “If I’m going to an event, I wouldn’t be caught dead in flats. I love to be tall on red carpets.”
Up next, the star will jet off again, this time to Las Vegas, where she’ll show her collection at FN Platform.
