Adidas Originals is set to release the NMD, a silhouette inspired by the brand’s iconic shoe history that also looks to its bright and promising future, bringing together classic design with the brand’s latest and greatest technology.
“When you see the future with no context, it could be confusing. But when you see the future with elements you recognize and are familiar with, it’s much easier to adapt into your life,” Nic Galway, VP of global design at Adidas Originals, told Footwear News. “This project has been designed completely without compromise, with the freedom to express how we want to be seen as [Adidas] Originals in the future.”
According to the brand, the shoe is a technical runner realized as a lifestyle sneaker and designed for a nomadic lifestyle.
The NMD draws inspiration from past Adidas Originals silhouettes that were considered progressive for their time, from the Micro Pacer to the Rising Star and the Boston Super — some of the brand’s most celebrated shoes. It boasts a midsole that incorporates the brand’s Boost technology, as well as a Primeknit upper for maximum flexibility, stability, and strength.
The shoe isn’t a reissue or an update of a past style — it’s a brand-new concept from Adidas.
Galway believes today’s customer expects innovation from the brands they purchase and that Adidas Originals is the leader in forward-thinking design.
“I feel there’s a desire now to be confident and challenge the status quo,” Galway said. “The consumer expects us to do that. We have all these opportunities, so we should take them.”
The Consortium NMD, boasting reflective panels, arrives today at select Adidas Consortium retailers and retails for $180. The NMD retails for $170 and will hit stores globally on Dec. 12 via select Adidas Originals retailers, Adidas Originals stores and the brand’s website. Reservations for the NMD can be made on the Adidas Confirmed App for select NYC and Chicago locations on Dec. 10.
