Nike Gives Michael J. Fox A Pair Of Air Mags From ‘Back To The Future II’

The rest of us have to wait until next spring for the self-lacing sneaker.

We now know who got a pair of self-lacing Nike Air Mag sneakers from the 1989 film “Back to the Future II.”

After some pretty big speculation today on social media, Nike revealed the answer on Twitter: Michael J. Fox.  It only seems appropriate that Mr. Fox gets the debut pair of the self-lacing sneakers. He was, after all, Marty McFly.

The rest of us are going to have to wait for next spring.

Oct. 21, 2015 is the day Doc Brown and Marty McFly travel to the future in the second film in the “Back to the Future” trilogy and has been declared as #BacktotheFutureDay on social media, with fans looking back at the film and its technological predictions. The self-lacing sneakers were the one element that hadn’t yet made it to reality (and maybe the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series.)

The new sneakers, called the Air Mag 2015, are indeed self lacing according to Nike. “We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes,” said Nike CEO Mark Parker. “By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner.”

While the details are still slim, the new sneakers are set for debut next spring and will be a limited edition sale benefitting the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
