Louis Vuitton Spring 2016: Shoe Highlights

Louis Vuitton charmed with its printed-silk ready-to-wear but failed to innovate with its footwear.

What happens when a brand gets too comfortable? It no longer feels the need to innovate. That was exactly the case for Louis Vuitton‘s spring ’16 footwear, which was shown during Paris Fashion Week.

The label indeed charmed with its ready-to-wear, where Artistic Director Kim Jones printed swans or cherry blossoms on silk bowling-style shirts and bomber jackets. Whimsical touches, like silk ascots and graphic striping, added visual interest.

But as one of the leading luxury brands in the world, Vuitton’s global domination has resulted in the footwear offering feeling a bit, well, like a snoozefest — as though a neglected sibling was overshadowed by a more confident, more applauded brother who everybody pays more attention to.

Low-top sneakers dominated the footwear collection. All-white or all-black styles made up the majority of it, with some of the white styles featuring Louis Vuitton’s signature monogram print in a barely-there finish.

The most interesting shoe, a chunky Velcro sandal, combined different leathers and suedes. Its black-and-white flatform sole was a continuation of the shoes shown for fall ’15, which saw lace-up dress shoes reworked in the graphic sole.
