Medaling in the Olympics eluded track and field star Jenny Simpson in her two past attempts. But that changed Tuesday night in Rio.
The New Balance-sponsored athlete scored the bronze in the women’s 1,500-meters, and as reported by NBC Sports after the race, it was the first U.S. medal in the event’s history. Prior to winning the bronze medal, Simpson came in ninth in the steeplechase in 2008 and did not make the final in the 1,500-meters in 2012.
In July, Simpson spoke with Footwear News about the footwear she trains in and what she’ll wear on race day. The Olympian confirmed that she’d be running in the New Balance MD 800 racing spikes in Rio, and trained in selections from the brand’s 880 and 870 franchises.
“I eliminated an enormous amount of stuff from my life,” Simpson told FN. “Leading up to the games, everybody trains hard — long runs, hard workouts [and] I watch my diet. But the biggest difference is, if you look at my calendar of appointments, meetings and trips, there’s nothing. My husband is incredibly supportive and takes care of a lot so I can sleep nine hours, train twice a day and not have the extra life stress.”
