The Biggest Shoe Trend At Cannes: Going Barefoot

While we’ve already seen many standout heels on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, there is another fashion statement worth noting: Many of Hollywood’s A-List actresses are kicking off their heels, literally.

On Sunday night, during a dinner held by the Women in Motion program, brought to life by French luxury group Kering, honorees Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis both removed their heels. (“God, you are tall,” Sarandon told Davis, her “Thelma & Louise” co-star, prompting the latter to remove her shoes.)

The actresses join a growing roster of stars who have removed their heels at the festival, which runs through May 22 in Cannes, France.

Kristen Stewart, the star of “Café Society,” tossed off her Christian Louboutin pumps last week during the opening day of the festival.

Julia Roberts removed her heels as she ascended the staircase at Palais des Festivals last Thursday, at the screening of her movie “Money Monster” — the first time that one of her films has been featured at the festival.

The A-list star slipped off the footwear and laughed as she climbed the venue’s famous red steps. A handler helped her back in the shoes after she made her way to the top. Last year, the festival’s dress code caused a torrent of comment, referred to as “#heelgate,” when 50 women were refused entry to the screening of “Carol” because they were wearing flats.
