The nominees for the 2024 Golden Globes were revealed on Monday Dec. 11, with Natalie Portman earning her fifth career Golden Globe nod. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Netflix’s “May December.”
Portman is a Golden Globe winner, taking home the statuette for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for “Closer” in 2005 and Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for “Black Swan in 2011. She first walked the Golden Globes red carpet back in 2000 when she was just 18 after earning her first nomination for “Anywhere but Here.”
She’s been one of Hollywood’s “It Girls” since she was just 13, when she made her film debut in 1994’s “Léon: The Professional.” Over the years, she’s channeled classic Hollywood elegance with a playful touch, turned heads in designer frocks ranging from classic to ornate, paired with strappy sandals — Jimmy Choos are a favorite — colorful or metallic pumps, peep-toes, sandals, and more. She also wears plenty of Dior, thanks to a long-running relationship with the courtier as a spokesperson and muse since 2011. She also went vegan that year, so she opts for non-leather shoes and accessories, giving her designer elegance a PETA stamp of approval.
Attending the premiere of her Apple TV+ series “The Lady in the Lake,” Portman went for a minimalist shoe option to match a unique Dior outfit. The classic black heeled sandals feature a strap across the toes and a strap around the ankle in addition to side straps in the back. Most of the foot is left uncovered, leaning into the “less is more” aesthetic.
For another event related to “Lady in the Lake,” Portman again opted for shoe with a minimalist design to go with a textured floral dress. In a shiny silver hue, this shoe featured a thin strap across the toes and another around the ankle; the heels were also elevated by a subtle platform.
At the “May December” premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, Portman turned heads in a stunning custom Dior strapless embellished tiered dress, a remake of Monsieur Christian Dior’s famous 1949 “Junon” gown. Yet her white silk platform peep-toe sky-high heels, which she revealed to walk Cannes’ iconic red steps, were a statement piece in themselves.
Portman’s iconic Dior Junon gown could’ve been her only red carpet moment of 2023 and it would’ve been enough. Yet the next day, at the “May December” photocall at Cannes, she stunned yet again, this time with classic It-girl cool, in an all-red look Jackie Kennedy Onassis could’ve worn. The Oscar-winner paired simple-yet-bold red slim-strap Jimmy Choo stilettos with an all-red look from Dior: an A-line belted minidress and red blazer casually resting over her shoulders, with large black shades.
For the premiere of the HBO docuseries “Angel City,” she served up “cool girls who lunch” in an all-black Miu Miu short and jacket set, further elevated with a pair of black peep-toe pumps with a large bow across the toe, thick straps and stiletto heels.
Simple strappy stilettos have remained a Portman red carpet essential over the years, using them to enhance her memorable red carpet looks. Here, at the “Thor: Love and Thunder” premiere, she pairs bronze single-strap stilettos with a bronze sequin one-shoulder minidress.
In March 2022, at the “Pachinko” premiere, she made her post-lockdown return to the red carpet a bold and beautiful statement. The carpet may not have been red, but she was. She stepped out in bold red pointed-toe silk slingback pumps and a matching red Magda Butrym minidress and blazer.
For the 2013 Paris premiere of “Thor: The Dark World,” Portman shines in Charlotte Olympia’s golden Gilda vegan heeled sandals, featuring crisscross straps across the toes. She paired it with a Christian Dior Spring 2013 black mesh overlay dress decorated with intricate flowers appliques.
At the 2012 Golden Globes, Portman served classic Hollywood glamor with a touch of whimsy, once again in red. She wore a custom strapless Lanvin silk gown with an asymmetrical skirt that playfully ballooned out to one side. Peeking out from underneath the statement dress were a pair of strappy silver Jimmy Choo sandals, the matched the diamonds she wore on her fingers, wrists and ears.
At the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, the “Black Swan” star looked romantic in a silky red and pink ensemble featuring the baby bump from her first child. She wore chic red silk open-toed Stella McCartney platforms with a wide strap across the toes. The shoes perfectly coordinated with the large red rose appliqué at the bodice of her dreamy pink satin strapless Viktor & Rolf dress.
At the “Black Swan” closing night gala at AFI Fest in 2010, the film’s star—she earned an Oscar and Golden Globe for her captivating performance — opted for a fun, spring-ready look. She wore intricate gold Christian Dior stilettos featuring a soft-rounded toe with cut-out detailing and a Mary Jane-style strap across top of the foot. She paired the golden shoes with a pink floral strapless cocktail dress with a beaded belt.
At the 2006 Golden Globes, Portman wore a pair of her tried-and-true black strappy Jimmy Choo sandals, the perfect complement to her vintage Chanel black lace midi strapless dress. She rocked her brown hair short—post “V for Vendetta” buzzcut and matched a statement ring — the only jewelry she wore — to the round floral design on the belt of the dress.
